Director's Message
Director of Aizawa Hospital
Katsunori Tauchi, M.D.
Since the day I became a physician, I have always cherished the spirit "For the patient". I have been trying to be a physician who sincerely gives one's attention to the patient and constantly seeks for what one can do or what one should do for the patient.
I desire to share this spirit with all the staffs and keep it in mind of all of us. Based on the spirit of "For the patient", we are working on improvement of patient safety and quality of care, and creating a system to constantly provide high quality care, which I believe, will make Aizawa Hospital more reliable.
I, as a director, will always make my greatest effort aiming for a "better hospital" for this region and all the patients.

Medical Technology
Diagnostic Equipment
MRI
There are two MRI scanners at Aizawa Hospital. MRI is an equipment to examine the suspicious lesion from every direction, for example, vertically, horizontally and diagonally, using strong magnetic field. MRI is the most suitable for imaging of cerebral blood vessels. It can provide clear images without contrast agents. MRI does not use radiation either, therefore there is no need to worry about radiation exposure.
CT
We have a 320-slice CT scanner and two 64-slice CT scanners. CT is equipment to produce cross-sectional images of the body using X ray. 320-slice CT scanner has the newest technology, Area Detector Technology, which enables to scan the whole blood vessels of the moving heart in a split second with radiation exposure reduced by 75% at the maximum. By taking advantage of one of the CT's characteristics which enables producing serial images in a short period of time, CT can provide chronological three dimensional images similar to cerebral angiograms. Therefore, CT is perfect for a diagnosis of cerebrovascular diseases or circulatory system conditions.
PET
We have two PET-CT scanners. While conventional diagnostic equipment such as CT and MRI detects tumors by the change of morphology, PET-CT visualize the active state of the cells to detect small cancer cells with the size of about 1 cm. PET-CT scan requires administration of radioactive agent, however, radiation exposure is about the same amount as a barium examination of the stomach. Radioactive substances are reduced by half after 2 hours from administration, and also excreted in the urine. On the next day, almost none remain in the body.
Angiography equipment
Angiography equipment is equipment to provide images of selected blood vessels by inserting a catheter and injecting contrast agents. In addition, this equipment is also used to widen cardiac blood vessels narrowed with blood clots, close off the blood vessels to stop bleeding in the stomach, and perform intravascular treatment such as treatment for cerebral aneurysm or cerebrovascular anomaly. Our angiography equipment can perform rotational angiography, which produces 3D images and cross-sectional images as CT scan.
Radiotherapy Machine
Proton Therapy
Proton therapy is a type of radiotherapy, which reduces radiation dose to healthy tissue and more effectively radiates the tumor compared to the conventional radiation therapy which uses x-rays. Therefore, proton therapy is known as radiotherapy for cancer which is less harmful to the body. Please go to “Proton Therapy page” for more information.
Gamma knife
Gamma knife is radiotherapy equipment which radiates a lesion in the brain from every direction with high precision using high-dose gamma ray. Gamma knife enables treating abnormalities inside the brain or functional brain disorder without a surgical procedure. Since Gamma knife is designed for noninvasive treatment, precision of pinpoint radiation, high efficiency and great treatment effect can be expected.
TomoTherapy
TomoTherapy is equipment combines intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) to irradiate only the appropriate site with the appropriate radiation dose.
Treatment Units
Endoscopy Rooms
There are 6 Endoscopy Rooms in Aizawa Hospital. We perform upper/lower gastrointestinal endoscopy to over 50 patients a day. Endoscopic treatments such as polypectomy are also performed.
Dialysis Center
There are 72 dialysis machines in the Dialysis Center. We perform 2 courses of dialysis treatment a day. Since dialysis takes hours, we pay much attention to keep the environment comfortable for patients.
Operating Theaters
There are 8 Operating Theaters in Aizawa Hospital. We have established a management system, which includes staffing of anesthesiologists, to provide surgeries (scheduled / emergency surgery) for various injuries and diseases 24 hours a day. Meanwhile, we are dedicated to safety management and preventing complications such as surgical site infections.
Chemotherapy Rooms
There are 24 Chemotherapy rooms (booths) in the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Patients can receive chemotherapy on the bed or reclining chair depending on their condition.
Features
Cancer Care
Recent studies show that one out of two Japanese people develop a cancer, and cancer has become the number one cause of death in Japan. Accordingly, to meet increasing cancer care needs, Aizawa Hospital is putting great effort into cancer care. In 2007, we established Aizawa Comprehensive Cancer Center and organized a system to propose and provide the most suitable cancer care for each patient’s needs, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgical therapy and palliative care. Aizawa Hospital has been designated as a Cancer care district liaison hospital by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare since 2008.
Emergency and Acute Care
Aizawa Hospital has established the Emergency and Critical Care Center in 2002 to accept patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We improve staffing of emergency physicians and nurses at the Center to provide care for various types of diseases or injuries. Over 45,000 patients receive medical care at our Center every year.
Back to Everyday Life
We provide early rehabilitation services along with acute treatments to enhance patients' functional recovery and to help patients go back to their everyday life as soon as possible.
